Drinking alcoholic beverages is a past-time habit among some people who consider such a means to relax and distress amidst the busy work schedule while others only take during special occasions to socialize with their friends or peers. This positive side, however, does not justify the drawbacks that a person could experience when the negative effects of drunkenness impair not just one’s judgment, but also the driving ability which may lead to driving while intoxicated or under the influence or accident. That would mean legal consequences and physical suffering which have already been suffered by many drivers as shown in the record of the US traffic administration. And thus, avoiding them by knowing these drinking effects before you drive and confront the problem is the right way to keep yourself safe and sound:

Lower Reaction Time

As the authorities noted, the increase in alcohol level by two units can distort the person’s reaction time, or can cause a driver to have slower response than usual. This can result to accident more particularly in emergency cases like vehicle crash or failure to pass the field sobriety tests when stopped by the police officers. It is one major reason why drivers with higher BAC are usually arrested because they could not even follow simple instructions during the road stop.

Impaired Vision

If the alcohol level increases, the night vision and the depth perception of the person are affected in a way that it is difficult for him to judge the distance of the objects accurately. This could also cause a blur vision which may result to double or distorted image of the object as the muscles on eye lose precision and unable to focus. Such effect is noticeable among drunk people who tend to focus only on the place straight ahead without minding anything in the side vision.

Poor Judgment and Comprehension

When the senses are affected, it also follows that the mental functioning is distorted; thus, causing drunk drivers to have poor judgment whether to drive or not and unable to foresee the consequence of their acts. And because of this, there are a lot of people who pursue driving even if they know they cannot control the wheels and take the risk of getting arrested for DWI or DUI.

Reduced Coordination and Higher Confidence

Road accidents are sometimes caused by the reduced coordination of the bodily parts of a driver more particularly the eyes, hands, and feet. Likewise, given that drunkenness boosts confidence, there is also higher probability that a person would have false sense of confidence that could lead to unusual driving behavior.

Meanwhile, there are certain signs which the police officers watch out to spot drivers who are drunk; namely, driving too fast or slow, taking wide turns, too close behind another car, unable to drive within the lane, driving without headlights, and many others. And so if you want to avoid being spotted and stopped along the way, the alternatives are to have designated driver, use public transportation, prior arrangement to stay at the place, or much safer not to drink alcoholic beverages.

Being aware of these alcohol drinking effects is quite advantageous considering that you can control yourself the next time you are tempted to get drunk and then drive without minding the risk for possible accident or DUI arrest.
